Design: A panacea for all ills

Hardly a day passes it seems, without the great and the good expounding the virtues of design and a ‘creative economy’, but we need to keep this all in check by realising that while design may be creeping up the agenda, being increasingly recognised for the benefits it can bring society and business, the public view of design will still be shaped by it’s exposure in the popular media.

To that end, if you asked Joe Public what a designer did, he’d probably base his response on what he saw on â??The Apprenticeâ??, Alan Sugar berating the losing team for designing a cat calendar, and praising the winners for their creativity in coming up with a calender featuring babies dressed up as business professionals.
