Advertising Ruins Everyday Life #435

At risk of coming across the grumpy old man, yesterday I sat through the FA cup semi finals trying to watch the play whilst all around the pitch flickering and flashing â??LCD ad screensâ?? were screaming at me to buy x, y or z products.

I may be alone in finding these adverts offensive and obtrusive, but a threshold has been crossed where sport advertising is no longer a case of brands competing with each other for our attention – They’re actually competing with the game itself. This was no doubt a ‘eureka’ moment for some ad exec, when the penny finally dropped – “Guys, we’ve been thinking about this all wrong! The problem isn’t people being distracted by other ads – they’re distracted by the game! They’re just not giving our ads the attention they’re due!” – And so they go on to conspire to foist these ugly LCD displays upon us. The most laughable moment was when an ad appeared featuring a bouncing football – I don’t know if the players found this distracting, but it could come in handy for José Mourinho as an excuse for Cheslea’s lack lustre performance…
