Branding Nations

It would seem the origins of place marketing date back further than we thought. In the Norse sagas, it is said that Eiríkur Rauði (Erik the Red) was exiled from Iceland for murder. Setting out from Iceland across the Arctic Ocean, he came across land rumoured to be to the Northwest of his homeland.

He decided to call this land ‘Greenland’ in order to attract more people to settle there. (Presumably someone had already taken ‘Acorn Grove’ or ‘The Granary’). Brand positioning circa 950 AD.
